herbst.pngOne of the most common problems orthodontists treat is the discrepancy that occurs when the upper teeth protrude over the lower, commonly referred to as an "overbite".

In many cases, this condition is due to a lower jaw that is set further back than desired. With these patients, we would like to encourage the lower jaw to catch up in growth, and fit more ideally within the upper jaw. The Herbst appliance can does this.

When the Herbst appliance is placed, opening and closing movement still occur easily. Initially they will need a diet with softer foods, however after a few days patients have adapted to the new tooth position and can easily chew their food.

Once placed, the Herbst appliance will be checked by Dr. Christopherson and adjusted at each of your appointments. If, sometimes between appointments, you develop some sore areas on the inside of your cheeks, please call for an appointment so that the necessary adjustments can be made.
